Last weekend, Tim Olk was on the scene of a serious collision between a CTA Brown Line train and an SUV at 4600 N. Kedzie in Chicago. He arrived just in time to capture the dramatic moments of the extrication process. The driver of the car suffered serious injuries, and the train ended up partially derailing as a result of the impact.
Tim’s photos show the chaotic yet coordinated efforts of emergency responders working to free the injured driver from the wreckage. Firefighters were seen assessing the damage and preparing equipment, including connecting hydraulic lines to a portable generator before beginning the rescue operation.
One image highlights the moment firefighters worked to extract the driver from the vehicle, which had been struck by the train. At the time, it remained unclear why the driver had stopped on the tracks. Another photo shows the train having impacted the car on the driver’s side before coming to rest near the station platform, with visible signs of the collision.
