A firefighter from Des Plaines, working in the fire prevention division, noticed smoke coming from the eaves of a house at 501 S. Mt. Prospect Road on Monday just before 2 p.m. After speaking with people outside the home, he contacted the RED Center to report the fire. He then entered the house to help two residents evacuate and later returned for a secondary search to ensure everyone was safe.
The incident prompted a significant emergency response, with three engine companies, two chief officers, and four Des Plaines ambulances dispatched. Additional units arrived from Mount Prospect, including a chief, a ladder truck, and an ambulance; from Prospect Heights, a chief and a truck; from Wheeling, an engine; and from Niles, a truck. Both Des Plaines Battalion 61 and Truck 61 were on training at NIPSTA and responded from there.
Firefighters determined that the fire originated in the second-floor bathroom, but by the time they arrived, the entire second-floor attic of the split-level home was fully involved. The cause of the fire is under investigation, and no injuries have been reported so far.
