Of interest … Indianapolis FD high-angle rescue

Excerpts from the Indianapolis Fire Department Facebook page:

At 10:15 AM, an IMPD drone got stuck on top of a construction crane during its overnight operation. The Indianapolis Fire Department’s Tactical Team 7C took this as a unique opportunity to conduct some last-minute high-angle rope and crane training, with support from Indy Public Safety Logistics.
High angle rope rescue is a complex and dangerous task that requires constant practice. It's not uncommon for our teams to deal with situations involving cranes, which makes real-world training like this invaluable. Today’s mission was a bit different—no human lives were at risk, just a drone that had gone rogue.
Under the leadership of Lt. Ben Roberts, Lt. Erik Baynard, who is SPRAT certified, led the operation, assisted by firefighter Ryan Cundiff. The team coordinated with TWG Construction, who allowed them access to the site. The building is set to become the future home of Rise on Meridian, a 269-unit apartment complex.
After shutting off and locking out the crane’s power source, the two firefighters began their climb. The crane’s mast stood at 130 feet tall, with a jib extending about 160 feet. The drone was positioned just 12 feet from the end of the jib. With only light winds at 3 mph, the weather conditions were favorable for the operation.
The climb started at 11:25 AM. By 11:33 AM, Baynard reached the jib, and by 11:45 AM, he successfully transitioned to the top. At 11:56 AM, he reported reaching the end of the crane’s safety cable and initiated his fall protection system. He completed the final steps by 12:06 PM and retrieved the drone at 12:23 PM. The drone was safely brought down by 12:33 PM. Both firefighters began their descent at 12:38 PM and returned to the ground at 1:26 PM.
The drone sustained minor damage but is expected to be repaired and returned to service soon. This event highlights the importance of continuous training and how even unexpected situations can turn into valuable learning experiences.
We are proud of our Tactical Teams and the way they adapt and perform under pressure. This kind of real-life training is crucial for maintaining our skills and readiness.
