The Wheeling Fire Department responded to a shed fire on Friday evening along Hintz Road near the railroad tracks. Units from Station 23 were dispatched after receiving a call about the incident, and they were directed to an asphalt contractor's yard just east of the MABAS Readiness Center, close to the railroad line.
A series of images captured by Larry Shapiro show firefighters at the scene. One photo highlights Wheeling Engine 23 supplying tank water as crews waited for a supply line to be charged. Another image shows an additional attack line being stretched, indicating the effort being made to control the blaze.
Upon arrival, Engine 23 found the fire burning in the yard next to a shed, spreading to a stack of wood pallets and threatening a nearby truck containing a tank filled with tar. To manage the situation, Squad 24 was called in with a pump-and-roll unit to assist with a rapid attack. Meanwhile, Engine 24 laid several hundred feet of LDH hose to connect to a hydrant on the adjacent property, ensuring a continuous water supply.
Squad 24 used a remote-controlled bumper turret to keep the flames away from the tar tank, demonstrating advanced firefighting techniques. The location was highly congested and surrounded by hazards, making the operation more complex. Several engine companies had multiple lines deployed as they worked to contain the fire.
Engine 24’s efforts in laying the long hose were critical in establishing a stable water supply, allowing other units to continue their attack. The hydrant used was located outside the MABAS Readiness Center, which previously housed the Wheeling Public Works Department.
Firefighters managed to hold the fire in check and keep the tar tank cool until the water supply was fully established, allowing them to extinguish the flames. A video of the response is available for viewing, and a gallery of additional photos can be found [here].
