5th Alarm with 1 Special for Crystal Lake house fire 5-2-13

This report comes from Tyler Tobolt:

The Crystal Lake Fire Department was called to a structure fire at 3217 Carrington Drive around 3:20 p.m. Engine 341 reported a massive fire upon arrival, prompting Battalion Chief 330 to request a second alarm for Box Card #5-371. Shortly after, Engine 341 arrived to find the two-story home fully engulfed and immediately switched to a defensive strategy. Within minutes, Battalion 330 arrived and escalated the response, requesting a Tender Box #5-371 for the fifth alarm. After securing the tanker, he also upgraded Engine Box #5-341 to the fifth alarm. Later, additional crews were brought in via a MABAS Division 4 Interdivisional Box alarm. The main structure was a large 2-story home measuring 50 by 50 feet, which had spread to three other residences. Embers from the fire sparked small brush fires in the surrounding area, and the main house eventually collapsed. More photos are available here: Facebook Link

From the Northwest Herald:

CRYSTAL LAKE – Two firefighters have been treated for injuries after four homes caught fire this afternoon in a neighborhood near Crystal Lake.

A single home is still burning on the 3200 block of Carrington Drive. Firefighters are being cautious due to a ruptured gas line, according to Crystal Lake Battalion Chief Chris Olsen.

Firefighters have not yet fully extinguished the fire because of concerns over dangerous fumes from the gas leak. Nicor has just arrived on scene to shut off the gas, allowing firefighters to finish putting out the blaze, Olsen said.

Olsen noted that the gas line is not believed to be the cause of the fire, and the origin remains under investigation. All residents who were inside the homes when the fire started managed to escape without injury. The two injured firefighters were taken to Centegra Hospital-McHenry with what are believed to be minor heat-related injuries.

The affected homes include one that has already burned down completely. The fire began at 3217 Carrington Drive after 3:30 p.m., and wind carried embers across the street, igniting neighboring houses. Several local fire departments and the Red Cross have responded to assist with the incident.

Terra Cotta Avenue and Valley View Road from Park Drive to Crystal Lake Avenue are currently closed due to the fire.
