A tragic accident occurred this morning involving a school bus and two Jeep vehicles, resulting in one fatality and multiple injuries. The collision took place at the intersection of Route 173 and Kilbourn Road, near Wadsworth. According to initial reports, the school bus ran a red light and was struck broadside by an open-top Jeep Wrangler traveling south on Kilbourn Road. The impact caused the bus to roll onto its side, and it then collided with a Jeep Cherokee that was also at the intersection.
All of the children on board were safely evacuated before emergency responders arrived. A third alarm was issued for life-safety, and several ambulances were dispatched. Some students were transported by ambulance, while others were taken to the hospital via another school bus, accompanied by fire department personnel. A Flight-For-Life helicopter was also on scene but did not transport any patients, as the Jeep Wrangler driver was pronounced dead at the location.
Tim Olk, a local photographer, captured some quick images from the scene. One photo shows the damaged Jeep Wrangler, where the driver lost his life. Another image highlights the Flight-For-Life helicopter that arrived but didn’t take anyone.
The Chicago Tribune reported that the accident happened around 8:05 a.m. as the school bus was heading west on Route 173 toward Newport Elementary School. Officials believe the bus may have been running late on the traffic signal, leading to the collision. The Jeep Wrangler driver was killed, while the children aboard were described as “walking wounded†with minor injuries.
Twenty-three children were taken to Advocate Condell Hospital in Libertyville by a second school bus, accompanied by two paramedics and two ambulances. Twelve more were transported by ambulance to other hospitals, along with two individuals from the Jeep Cherokee. By midday, most of the children had been released, with only one remaining for further observation.
