Here's a message from Brian Murphy: These newspaper clippings, taken from the Waukegan News-Sun, show a major fire at the former Giess-Plfeger Tanning Company located on Waukegan’s Lakefront. The fire broke out on November 15, 1973, and involved a large section of the building—constructed with heavy timber and used as a mill—which was in the process of being demolished after it was sold to Commonwealth Edison. The Waukegan Generating Station is just across the street from the site. I apologize for the poor quality of these clippings—they’ve been sitting in a shoebox for over 40 years, so you can imagine how they look. If anyone has any memories or additional information about this event, I’d love to hear from you. Best regards, Giess-Pfleger Tanning Company Fire, Waukegan – November 15, 1973. It's amazing how much history is hidden in old newspapers. If you have any stories or details about the fire, please reach out. We're always looking to preserve local history and share it with others who might be interested.
