PetroChina's First Polypropylene Catalyst and Process Engineering Pilot Plant Feeding
On June 16, it was reported that the first polypropylene catalyst and process engineering pilot plant developed by the China Petroleum and Petrochemical Research Institute has successfully started feeding materials and produced high-quality polypropylene products. The facility has now operated continuously and stably for 72 hours, marking a major milestone in the company's technological development.
With China's rapid economic growth, the demand for polypropylene has surged significantly. In recent years, domestic production capacity for polypropylene has expanded rapidly. To further enhance its independent innovation capabilities and market competitiveness, the company decided in 2007 to build a polypropylene catalyst and process engineering pilot plant through the Petrochemical Institute.
The project involved a total investment of 99.98 million yuan. It includes key components such as catalyst preparation, polymerization reaction, flash evaporation, and drying. The designed capacity is 75 kg/h of polypropylene, enabling research on homopolymerization of propylene, ethylene/propylene copolymerization, and ethylene/propylene/butene-1 terpolymerization. Experts have noted that the technology used in this facility is at an international advanced level.
The project was approved following a feasibility study in August 2007 and entered the construction phase. Under the coordination of the Group Corporation’s planning, science and technology management departments, and refining and chemical branches, with strong support from Lanzhou Petrochemical Company, the Petrochemical Institute faced tight schedules, heavy workloads, and no prior experience in similar projects. Despite challenges in confirming boundary conditions, the team worked diligently, focusing on personnel training, system building, safety management, and ensuring all necessary conditions were met. After months of hard work, the project was completed on schedule, and the facility was officially launched on April 28, 2009.
This successful operation of the polypropylene catalyst and process engineering pilot plant creates favorable conditions for the development of new catalysts in synthetic resins, the creation of high-value-added products, and the optimization of production processes. It will play a crucial role in improving the product structure and enhancing the market competitiveness of CNPC's synthetic resin offerings.
