Tree on power line causes fire in Northbrook, 6-12-16

Excerpts from ChicagoSunTimes.com:

A massive tree fell in the 3000 block of Keystone in Northbrook on Sunday morning, triggering a chain reaction that left residents in shock. The fallen tree not only knocked down power lines but also ruptured a gas line, igniting a fire that continued to burn for hours after it first started.

Captain Dave Crawford of the Northbrook Fire Department explained that crews were initially called to the scene due to the downed tree. However, upon arrival, they discovered that the tree had caused more serious damage—breaking both power and gas lines, which led to a dangerous fire. Due to the ongoing risk, firefighters had to wait for Com-Ed to cut off the electricity before they could safely handle the gas leak and finally extinguish the flames. It took three hours before the situation was under control.

The incident raised concerns about public safety and the potential dangers of severe weather. Local authorities urged residents to remain cautious and stay away from the area until officials confirmed it was safe.
