PetroChina's First Polypropylene Catalyst and Process Engineering Pilot Plant Feeding
On June 16, it was reported that the first polypropylene catalyst and process engineering pilot plant established by the China Petroleum and Petrochemical Research Institute has successfully started feeding materials and produced polypropylene products. The facility has operated continuously and stably for 72 hours, marking a major breakthrough in domestic polypropylene technology.
With China's rapid economic growth, the demand for polypropylene has surged. In recent years, the country's polypropylene production capacity has significantly expanded. To further strengthen its independent innovation and market competitiveness in polypropylene products, the company decided in 2007 to build a polypropylene catalyst and process engineering pilot plant through the Petrochemical Institute.
The project, with a total investment of 99.98 million yuan, includes key components such as catalyst preparation, polymerization reaction, flash evaporation, and drying. It is designed to produce 75 kg of polypropylene per hour and supports research on propylene homopolymerization, ethylene/propylene copolymerization, and ethylene/propylene/butene-1 terpolymerization. According to industry experts, the technology used in this pilot plant is at an international advanced level.
Approved in August 2007, the project entered the construction phase under the leadership of the Group Corporation’s planning, science and technology management departments, and refining and chemical branches. With strong support from Lanzhou Petrochemical Company, the Petrochemical Institute faced tight schedules, heavy workloads, and no prior experience in similar projects. Despite challenges in confirming boundary conditions, the team focused on personnel training, system building, safety management, and infrastructure support. After months of hard work, the project was completed on schedule and officially launched on April 28, 2009.
The successful operation of the pilot plant provides a solid foundation for the development of new catalysts in synthetic resins, high-value-added products, and process optimization. It will play a crucial role in enhancing the product structure and market competitiveness of CNPC's synthetic resin offerings. This achievement represents a significant step forward in China's efforts to develop advanced petrochemical technologies independently.
