AMT mass production or will determine the market variable of heavy transmission

In 2009, the domestic heavy-duty transmission market was undergoing a major transformation since 2001. Industry insiders expressed their concerns about the ongoing changes in the sector. The long-standing turmoil surrounding the China-Fahrenheit transmission series, which had been ongoing since early 2008, finally came to an end by November of that year. However, as the years passed, the structure of the heavy-duty transmission industry began to shift significantly. Big Tooth, once part of Taiyuan Heavy Industry, was reorganized under China National Heavy Duty Truck (CNHTC). Meanwhile, Fast, the top-selling brand in heavy-duty transmissions, officially announced its entry into the passenger car market. This move was supported by a joint venture with ZF, marking a bold step into a new segment. Industry experts noted that these changes were not random but rooted in historical developments. In the mid-1980s, when the Steyr heavy-duty truck system was introduced, Fast, Fangs, and Big Tooth each had distinct roles within the planned economy: Fast focused on high-horsepower products above 260 HP, Fangs handled lower horsepower units, and Big Tooth specialized in quasi-heavy-duty models. This division led to minimal competition and a stable market environment. However, things changed in the 1990s when Big Gear expanded into the passenger car market, rapidly gaining a 60% share by the late 1990s. Later, due to production issues, it shifted focus back to trucks, while Fangs also faced similar challenges. These problems led to a significant gap in the heavy-duty truck market for vehicles over 15 tons between 2001 and 2004, creating opportunities for competitors to rise. Fast, after joining forces with Eaton, experienced substantial growth. With improved production capacity, it entered the passenger car market in 2006, becoming a key supplier for brands like Yutong, Ankai, and others. Despite this, Fast has not always maintained a clear advantage. Today, the domestic heavy-duty transmission market is dominated by Shaanxi Fast Gear Co., Ltd., Qijiang Gear Transmission Co., Ltd., Shanxi Datong Gear Group Co., Ltd., and FAW Harbin Transmission Factory. Recently, Big Gear’s integration into CNHTC has opened up new possibilities, allowing the company to introduce advanced technologies such as Nissan Diesel and European 16-speed transmissions. CNHTC’s expertise in the automotive industry is expected to further enhance Big Gear’s technological capabilities. According to insiders, Dazhong Group is set to become China's largest gear and shaft manufacturing base under CNHTC. It is projected that within 3 to 5 years, the restructured Big Gear could achieve sales of 3 to 5 billion yuan, eventually reaching 10 billion yuan in 5 to 7 years. Big Gear remains confident in its future prospects. Currently, Big Gear holds more than 86% of the market share for vehicles over 8 tons, and over 92% for those over 15 tons. Its products are exported to over 10 countries and regions. Meanwhile, Fast has also made a strong push into the passenger car market, developing a new range of transmission products to meet demand from buses to large passenger cars. While Fast is focusing on survival through expansion, Qiangzhong, which dominates the high-end passenger car market, has chosen to collaborate with ZF, following the traditional path of joint ventures to access advanced technology. According to statistics, one-third of the domestic heavy-duty transmission market is imported, and two-thirds of local products rely on foreign technology. Only one manufacturer, Caier, can supply transmissions for 13.8-meter urban buses. International players like ZF and Eaton are waiting for further localization opportunities, and their joint ventures may soon surpass both Big Gear and Fast, especially as automatic transmissions become a critical bottleneck. "At this point, the training for our AMT assembly line and workers is complete, and we will start mass production soon," said a CNHTC representative. "We plan to produce 30,000 units annually once the product is launched." Reports indicate that in 2009, heavy trucks will feature AMT models. FAW Group has already deployed several AMT models. Fast, Big Gear, and Reed have also conducted extensive road tests and are preparing to launch their AMT products soon. "Some analysts believe that this year will see a surge of heavy vehicles equipped with AMT, marking the true industrialization of domestic heavy-duty automatic transmissions and the beginning of the automatic shifting era." "In this new reshuffle, the mass production of AMT will determine the future layout of the industry," said some industry experts.
