New full-fibre biogas digesters appear in dual streams

An oval, white digester standing about 3 meters tall and 5 meters in diameter is made entirely of solid fiberglass. Recently, the author learned from the Shuangliu County Science and Technology Bureau that this innovative glass-steel mobile digester was developed right in Shuangliu. As part of a pilot program, the technology will be introduced to 5,000 farmers in a vegetable base in Chengdu. "Traditional biogas digesters can produce only 0.2 to 0.3 cubic meters of biogas per cubic meter per day," said Jiang Qiwen, an expert in full-floating glass-steel mobile digesters. "This 'glass house' produces at least 30% more gas than conventional models." These mobile digesters can be easily placed in rural homes, farms, or vegetable-growing areas. Once organic waste is fed into the system, it undergoes fermentation inside the white fiberglass structure. The resulting biogas is then released through the air outlet, ready for use in cooking and lighting. Jiang explained that the design of the elliptical shape was based on optimal pressure distribution and structural efficiency. He also noted that the lifespan of a mobile digester is approximately 50 years, making it a long-term investment. In terms of cost, the new fiberglass digester is slightly more expensive than traditional concrete models. A concrete methane tank costs around 1,700 yuan, while the fiberglass version costs about 2,300 yuan. However, concrete tanks often suffer from poor sealing, leading to gas leakage and the need for annual maintenance costing around 200 yuan. In contrast, the fiberglass digester requires no maintenance and lasts up to 50 years. Additionally, the production time for a fiberglass digester is just two days (including pit digging), which is ten times faster than the traditional method. Over a 10-year period, using a fiberglass digester can save about 1,400 yuan compared to traditional structures. Beyond its cost-effectiveness, the digester offers unique benefits. The high-purity biogas produced can be used not only for energy but also for pest control in greenhouses. When applied to a 1–3 acre vegetable field, the biogas can kill most pests within 15 minutes. It can also be converted into organic fertilizer, helping to manage crop residues effectively. According to officials from the County Agricultural Development Bureau, the biogas application technology has been included in the Chengdu Science and Technology Special Support Project. As part of the first pilot group, the glass-steel mobile digester will be promoted across 5,000 vegetable farms, livestock facilities, and rural households this year. One key advantage of the glass-steel digester is its ability to serve multiple households simultaneously, a feature that concrete digesters lack. This innovation aims to replace outdated concrete models, reduce environmental pollution, promote ecological protection, and turn waste into valuable resources. It has made a meaningful contribution to solving rural fuel issues. The Shuangliu County Science and Technology Bureau emphasized that all parts of the biogas digester are manufactured in a factory and delivered to the site for assembly. This process allows for quick installation and ensures high reliability, safety, and mobility. The technology is ideal for economically developed regions or areas with special geological conditions. Currently, 30 units have already been deployed in Yilipo Village, Huangjia Town, and the county has established its first full glass-steel digester demonstration base.
