British FlyBus Installation Test Flywheel Hybrid Bus

The British Flybus Group successfully installed flywheel hybrid equipment in its Optrae midibus passenger car. The Flybus system uses a combination of a Ricardo Kinergy flywheel energy storage medium and a Torotrak continuously variable transmission (CVT) to transfer energy between the wheels and the flywheel. One of the means, its cost is much lower than the current electric hybrid car.

When the driver depresses the brakes, the braking energy will drive the flywheel to rotate, and the flywheel speed can reach up to 60000 rpm. When the driver releases the brake pedal and depresses the accelerator pedal, the high-speed rotating flywheel transmits kinetic energy to the rear wheels through a continuously variable transmission mechanism.

The traditional engine is still located at the front of the vehicle and is responsible for driving the front wheels. When the driver depresses the brake pedal, the power connection between the front wheels and the engine is automatically disconnected so that the flywheel kinetic energy recovery system can fully store kinetic energy, resulting in more rapid acceleration. The maximum output of the system is 80hp. When the brake pedal is pressed to activate the flywheel kinetic energy recovery system, the time of kinetic energy recovery, that is, the free rotation time of the flywheel is limited, so the flywheel kinetic energy recovery system is more suitable for a stop-and-go driving environment in the city. Volvo expects that in a typical car environment, that is, a hybrid model combining urban vehicles and freeway cruising, a model equipped with a flywheel kinetic energy recovery system will have its engine stalled for half of the time.

The flywheel kinetic energy recovery system is a low-cost alternative to the expensive battery packs and electronic control units of traditional hybrid systems. If Flybus's flywheel hybrid system is going well, it will be put into mass production within a few years. Flybus will launch a road test of the flywheel hybrid system, which also makes Flybus the world’s first automotive manufacturer to put flywheel hybrid systems into public bus testing.
