China's important minerals show a decreasing trend in foreign dependence

With the continuous progress in mineral exploration and improved production capacity of mineral resources, China's reliance on imported minerals has significantly decreased in recent years. At a national geological exploration management conference held on the 21st, Wang Min, deputy director of the Ministry of Land and Resources, highlighted that the discovery of numerous new mineral deposits has enhanced the country’s resource security. For instance, the foreign dependence on lead and zinc has dropped from a peak of 30% in 2006 to nearly self-sufficient levels today. Similarly, iron ore import dependency fell from 56.7% in 2005 to 51.7% in 2007, with further reductions expected. Potassium salt imports have also declined from 90% in 2001 to below 70% by 2007, and new discoveries in deep chromite and nickel mines are expected to ease the heavy reliance on imports. Since the "Eleventh Five-Year Plan," significant progress has been made in exploring key metallogenic belts across China. New reserves of critical minerals like iron, copper, and aluminum have increased substantially. A total of 1,202 new mineral sites were discovered, including 194 large and 240 medium-sized deposits. The Gongchangling Iron Mine, with over 100 million tons of iron ore, marked a major breakthrough in iron exploration. In western China, the Qulong Copper Mine in Tibet became a new 10-million-ton-grade base. In Guangxi, the Xinyi Bauxite Mine and Longhe Aluminum Mine were identified as large-scale reserves, forming new bauxite exploration bases. Lead-zinc exploration also showed promising results, with the Shennongjia Ice-Hole Mountain Mine in Hubei and the Longshan-Baojing Mine in Hunan each discovering over 1.8 million and 2 million tons of resources respectively. Meanwhile, gold exploration achieved breakthroughs in both old mining areas and new regions. The Lop Nur potash deposit in Xinjiang was identified, leading to the construction of a second major potassium salt production base, which is expected to boost annual production by 1.2 million tons by 2009. Despite these achievements, Wang Min noted that more than 70% of China’s territory remains unexplored, and only about one-third of key resources like iron, copper, and zinc have been fully assessed. Nearly half of the resource-depleted mines still hold prospecting potential. With ongoing exploration efforts, many new exploitable mines are expected to be found, further enhancing China’s resource security and reducing its vulnerability to global market fluctuations.
