From the City of Evanston website:
A special remembrance ceremony will be held by the Evanston Fire and Police Departments on Wednesday, July 22, at 2:00 p.m. in Firemen’s Park. This event is dedicated to honoring the brave lives of fallen firefighters William Craig, George Stiles, and Marty Leoni.
This year marks significant milestones: 110 years since the tragic deaths of William Craig and George Stiles, who lost their lives during a fire at the Clayton Marks Building on December 13, 1905. Marty Leoni, a firefighter and paramedic, passed away on July 22, 1985, while responding to a structure fire at 1927 Jackson Ave., where an infant was reported to be trapped on the second floor. His death was the second such tragedy for the Evanston Fire Department in that century—a painful reminder of the risks faced by those who serve.
Fire Chief Greg Klaiber said, “Thirty years ago, Firefighter/Paramedic Marty Leoni made the ultimate sacrifice while searching for a trapped victim. On July 22, we will honor his memory along with that of Firefighters Craig and Stiles, whose service and sacrifice continue to inspire us all.â€
The ceremony will also pay tribute to other firefighters and police officers who have given their lives in the line of duty.
