All of the catalytic fines remaining in the fuel after centrifugation have the potential to cause engine wear and damage. Studies of high cylinder and piston ring wear cases have shown that catalyzing the intrusion of fine particles into the liner will cause nearly 90% wear, leading some engine manufacturers to limit the catalytic fines entering the engine to 10-15 ppm during combustion.
