Wu Petrochemical launches desulphurization attack to ensure safe production

The newly built 1.2 million tons per year delayed coking unit at Wuzhou Petrochemical Co., Ltd. experienced significant start-up challenges, leading to unstable operations and a number of environmental and operational issues. The unit generated excessive alkali slag discharge, and the desulfurization of liquefied gas and dry gas was not meeting standards, which posed risks to the overall plant safety, product quality, and environmental compliance. In response, the company mobilized technical teams to investigate the root causes, ruled out equipment failures, and implemented corrective measures to ensure safe and stable operation of the facility. As a key part of the company's 8 million tons per year reconstruction and expansion project, this delayed coking unit was designed with advanced technology, including localized fiber membrane desulfurization. It was completed and started up in June of this year. However, shortly after commissioning, the plant faced serious problems: the liquefied gas and dry gas contained high sulfur levels, and the alkaline slag caused severe impacts on the sewage treatment system. This led to substandard products, increased energy consumption in downstream processing, and even forced the use of the flare system at times. The abnormal start-up of the new unit raised major concerns for Wuzhou Petrochemical. The company quickly organized cross-departmental teams to conduct a thorough investigation. They identified multiple issues across various installations and equipment, then collaborated closely with manufacturers to carry out on-site research and problem-solving. Through process optimization based on design parameters, instrument structure adjustments, and equipment replacements, they gradually resolved the issues. Before these improvements, the plant was losing about 8 tons of alkali waste daily, significantly increasing sewage treatment costs. Additionally, around 80 tons of liquefied gas and dry gas per day had excessive sulfur content, causing energy losses and posing safety risks to downstream units. Thanks to the persistent efforts of the company’s technical staff, the new unit is now operating stably, with desulfurization of products meeting requirements and a notable reduction in alkali loss. These achievements highlight the company's commitment to continuous improvement and sustainable development.
