Wu Petrochemical launches desulphurization attack to ensure safe production

The newly built 1.2 million tons per year delayed coking unit at Wuzhou Petrochemical Co., Ltd. faced significant start-up challenges, leading to unstable operations and excessive discharge of alkali slag. Additionally, the desulfurization of liquefied gas and dry gas was not meeting standards, which posed risks to the overall plant safety, impacted product quality, and raised concerns about environmental compliance. In response, the company mobilized technical teams to investigate the issues, ruled out equipment failures, and worked diligently to ensure the safe and stable operation of the facility. This delayed coking unit is a critical part of the company’s 8 million tons per year reconstruction and expansion project. It was constructed using advanced localized fiber membrane desulfurization technology. The unit was completed and commissioned in June of this year. However, shortly after startup, the liquefied gas and dry gas were found to contain high levels of sulfur, while the alkaline slag caused severe stress on the sewage treatment system. Substandard products led to increased energy consumption during downstream processing, and in some cases, the flare system had to be used unnecessarily. The unusual start-up process prompted Wuzhou Petrochemical to take the issue very seriously. They formed cross-departmental teams to conduct a thorough investigation and identified multiple installation and equipment-related problems. The company collaborated closely with manufacturers, conducted on-site joint research, and made necessary adjustments. They revised design parameters, optimized instrument configurations, and replaced faulty equipment. Before these improvements, the plant was losing approximately 8 tons of alkaline waste daily, significantly increasing wastewater treatment costs. Meanwhile, around 80 tons of sulfur-laden liquefied gas and dry gas were produced each day, resulting in energy losses during secondary processing and potential safety risks for downstream units. Through the persistent efforts of the company's technical staff, the new unit is now operating stably, with desulfurization of products meeting standards and a notable reduction in alkali consumption and loss.
