Box alarm in Cicero, 1-11-16

On Monday afternoon, Cicero Fire Department companies responded to a reported apartment fire at 1401 51st Court. Upon arrival, crews observed smoke coming from the eaves of a three-story, wood-frame multi-unit building. Due to the rapidly spreading conditions, firefighters were forced to evacuate the structure and transitioned to a defensive operation. About 30 minutes into the incident, the alarm was upgraded to a Box Alarm to manage the growing situation. Multiple hand lines were deployed, along with master streams from Cicero Truck 2, Stickney Truck 1201, and Cicero Truck 1. A special request was made for the Forest Park tower ladder, which arrived on scene after Cicero Truck 1 had been pulled out. In addition to the local engines, support units from Stickney and Lyons were also pumping water to assist in the firefighting efforts. Photographers and videographers were on site, capturing the intense response. Steve Redick provided video footage, while Larry Shapiro captured a series of powerful images showing fire trucks, firefighters in action, and the heroic efforts of emergency personnel. The photos include scenes of firefighters rescuing pets, operating hoses, and working under challenging conditions. Some images even show equipment covered in ice, likely due to cold weather or water exposure. Among the many shots, one highlights Fire Chief Gordon J. Nord, Jr., overseeing operations on the scene. Another features an African American firefighter pulling a hose, showcasing the diversity and dedication of the team. There are also images of a canteen and rehab unit set up to support the crews working long hours. The incident remains under investigation, but the swift and coordinated response by multiple departments helped prevent further damage. More photos from the scene can be viewed below.
