This just in from the scene of a freight train derailment near the 2100 block of East 95th Street on Chicago’s South Side. It happened this afternoon, and thankfully, no one was injured. However, several tank cars came off the tracks, prompting a Level I Haz Mat response. Cleanup efforts are already underway as crews work to address the situation.
I’m TIM OLK, and I’ve been here since it all went down. Here’s what I’ve seen so far. First off, take a look at this image—there’s a tank car that clearly veered off the tracks, and its cargo remains unidentified for now. Judging by the photos I’ve taken, it seems like they’re dealing with quite the mess.
In another shot, you can see heavy machinery being brought in to help remove those problematic tank cars. This is no small task, as multiple units have come off the rails, and it’ll take some effort to get them back on track. Take a moment to absorb this next photo—I captured a wide view showing just how extensive the damage is. The tracks themselves are severely compromised, which adds another layer of complexity to the recovery process.
And finally, here’s a closer look at the aftermath. It’s clear that several cars will need to be relocated or repaired before things return to normal. The response team is doing everything they can to ensure safety while mitigating any potential hazards. As of right now, traffic in the area might be affected, but authorities are managing the situation carefully.
