Yesterday afternoon, the Long Grove Fire Protection District responded to a field fire that erupted behind a residence located at 3448 Hidden Valley Road. Upon arrival, the first responding unit discovered flames engulfing a dry marsh area filled with tall cattails. Concerned about shifting winds threatening nearby homes, they quickly called for additional resources and even requested a structural response as a precaution.
As the fire intensified due to strong winds, more alarms were sounded to support the initial crews who were struggling against the growing blaze and extreme heat. The area lacks hydrants, so tanker trucks were urgently dispatched, along with wildland assistance from the Lake and McHenry County Wildland Team.
Firefighters spread out across the marshy terrain and the expansive yards of surrounding homes. Each property in this neighborhood boasts large, multi-acre lots. Neighbors joined forces, using garden hoses to protect their homes until the firefighters could fully address the situation.
Additional resources arrived from numerous neighboring departments including Buffalo Grove, Palatine, Lake Zurich, and many others. Together, they managed to contain the fire, which eventually burned through around 18 acres of land. A young man, just 18 years old, was arrested by the Lake County Sheriff's Department after being identified as the person responsible for starting the fire with fireworks. He now faces charges related to the incident.
One firefighter was taken to the hospital for treatment of heat exhaustion but was later released. Despite the challenges posed by the lack of water infrastructure and the intense heat, the collaborative effort ensured that no structures were lost, and the fire was brought under control after approximately seven hours.
