Yesterday afternoon, I witnessed a wildland fire break out near a residential area in Long Grove. It started in a marshy area behind the house located at 3448 Hidden Valley Road. The initial responders from the Long Grove Fire Protection District quickly identified the threat posed by the dry cattails and the strong winds that could potentially spread the fire toward nearby homes. As a precaution, they called for extra help and even requested structural reinforcements.
The situation escalated rapidly as the flames spread further due to the wind. Additional emergency units were called in, including tanker trucks since the neighborhood lacks hydrants. The Lake and McHenry County Wildland Team also joined the effort to control the blaze. Firefighters had to spread out across the marshy terrain and along the yards of multiple homes on the block. Each home here sits on a large, multi-acre lot, which complicated the firefighting efforts.
Despite the challenges, several neighbors took matters into their own hands, using garden hoses to douse their properties while waiting for the professionals to reach them. Meanwhile, specialized equipment like the Rosenbauer Timberwolf was deployed to tackle the intense flames. Firefighters worked tirelessly, often switching between structural gear and wildland tactics depending on the immediate threat.
By the end of the evening, an 18-year-old male was arrested by the Lake County Sheriff’s Department for allegedly starting the fire with fireworks. One firefighter suffered from heat exhaustion but was treated and released. The fire ultimately consumed around 18 acres of land before it was fully contained nearly seven hours after it began.
Mutual aid came pouring in from numerous neighboring departments, including Buffalo Grove, Palatine, Lake Zurich, and many others. It was truly a community effort to bring the situation under control.
