This just in from the scene of a freight train derailment earlier this afternoon near the 2100 block of East 95th Street on Chicago’s South Side. Thankfully, no one appears to have been injured in the incident, but several tank cars ended up off the tracks. A Level I Haz Mat response was called in as a precaution, and crews are now working to clean up the mess.
I’m TIm Olk, and I’ve got some exclusive photos taken right after the derailment. You can see one of the tank cars, which was carrying an unidentified substance, completely off the rails. It’s clear that the damage to the track is extensive, with multiple cars involved in the mishap.
The image below shows heavy machinery being brought in to help remove the derailed tank cars. As you can see, there’s a significant amount of work ahead to get the tracks back to normal operation. This is a busy area, so traffic disruptions are expected to continue for some time.
Another shot captures the extent of the derailment—several cars appear to be damaged, and it’s going to take a lot of effort to get everything back on track. The cleanup process is already underway, but it’s likely to be a lengthy operation given the number of affected cars and the potential hazards involved.
