On October 21st, 2020, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky paid a visit to Unit City in Kyiv, Ukraine, where he met with local residents to discuss how they were coping during the ongoing pandemic. During his tour of the facilities, President Zelensky had the chance to see the Delfast electric bike for the first time. Impressed, he made a commitment to support the development of an electric bike manufacturing plant in the country.

Daniel Tonkopiy and Serhii Denysenko, co-founders of Delfast, were thrilled to have this opportunity to present their vision to the president. They explained how Delfast's sales had surged four to five times during the lockdown period, highlighting the growing demand for eco-friendly transportation options like electric bikes. They also shared their observations on the shift in consumer behavior, with more people moving away from cars and crowded public transport towards cycling and e-bikes.

Zelensky was surprised to learn that he hadn't ridden a bike in quite some time. This led to a discussion about the state of bike infrastructure in Ukraine, particularly the lack of proper bike lanes in cities like Kyiv. The founders noted that despite numerous requests, there had been little progress on improving these essential amenities.

As the conversation continued, Tonkopiy brought up the current challenge faced by Delfast: its production facility is located in China. He expressed the desire to relocate production to Ukraine but emphasized the need for governmental support to make this transition feasible. President Zelensky responded positively, stating, “I am ready to support the production of e-bikes in Ukraine.” Both parties agreed that a location near Kyiv, such as Bila Tserkva, approximately 80 kilometers from the capital, would be ideal.

One of the attendees humorously suggested that Zelensky would now become the personal "investment nanny" for Delfast, given his promise to assist in establishing the new factory. Despite the light-hearted comment, it underscored the seriousness of the collaboration and the potential impact on Ukraine's burgeoning tech and green energy sectors.
