The "Butyl Rubber Bromination Reaction Study" project conducted by the Yanshan Petrochemical Research Institute recently received official approval from Yanshan Petrochemical Company. This marks another significant milestone in the advancement of bromobutyl rubber technology, following the company's successful development of a 30,000-ton-per-year bromobutyl rubber technology package with independent intellectual property rights.
Bromobutyl rubber plays a crucial role as an essential raw material in the production of tubeless radial tire inner liners. With the rapid growth of China's tire industry, the demand for bromobutyl rubber has surpassed that of conventional butyl rubber. However, domestic consumption is still largely dependent on imports, with prices exceeding 30,000 yuan per ton. As a key innovation in the evolution of butyl rubber, brominated butyl rubber is seen as a promising direction for future development. Recognizing its importance, Yanshan Petrochemical's research into bromobutyl rubber was included in the "Ten Major Challenges" initiative under Sinopec Group’s Eleventh Five-Year Plan. The project is expected to be completed and operational by the end of 2008, further strengthening China's self-reliance in this critical material.
