Over the past few months, we’ve been closely monitoring the evolving situation between the Village of Barrington and the Barrington Countryside Fire Protection District. For those catching up, previous updates on this topic can be found [here], [here], [here], [here], and [here].
Recently, The Daily Herald reported that the Barrington Countryside Fire Protection District is moving forward with plans to recruit new personnel. According to the article, discussions around the potential year-end split with the Barrington Fire Department have transitioned from hypothetical to operational—shifting focus from "why" to "how."
District President Tom Rowan mentioned that formal requests for proposals have already been issued, aiming to hire 33 employees, including a chief, who will be prepared to take over responsibilities from the Barrington Fire Department starting January 1st. It's important to note that while the Barrington Fire Department initially served only within the village limits, the fire protection district extends further into areas like Barrington Hills, Inverness, Lake Barrington, South Barrington, and parts of unincorporated Cook, Lake, and McHenry counties.
Station 1 will continue to operate under the Barrington Fire Department, but if the split occurs, the fire protection district will gain control of Stations 2 and 3. Both entities have agreed to evenly divide shared equipment through a coin toss, as suggested by Rowan. This decision follows the notification last fall that the longstanding contract would conclude on December 31, 2013, due to the district's frustration over the village's failure to provide sufficient staffing and resources.
Despite these developments, Barrington Village President Karen Darch expressed optimism, suggesting there’s still ample opportunity for reconciliation and addressing outstanding issues. However, Rowan seems confident that the only matter left to resolve is deciding whether the coin toss result is "heads" or "tails" when splitting assets.
