Chicago 4-11 Alarm Fire 12-29-12 (pt 4)

Saturday’s fire at 2444 W. 21st Street was quite an ordeal, with multiple alarms being called in as the situation escalated rapidly. Here's how it all went down, pieced together from various sources: At 1:08 PM, Engine 23 was dispatched to look for rubbish at 2500 W. Cullerton St., but their primary focus was on the fire at 2444 W. 21st St. A number of units were mobilized right away, including Engine 23, Engine 109, Truck 32, Truck 7, Battalion 4, Tower Ladder 5, Squad 1, Command Van 2-7-1, Battalion 14, and Ambulance 34. By 1:13 PM, the fire had intensified, with smoke visible on the second floor and heavy smoke coming out of several first-floor windows. Engine 18 and Engine 26 joined the effort, along with Truck 8 and Ambulance 33. Deputy District 1 and Battalion 15 also arrived on the scene. Things got worse quickly, and by 1:20 PM, it was declared a 2-11 Alarm. Heavy fire was reported throughout the three-story warehouse, which measured approximately 200x150 feet. The decision was made to go defensive, and Battalion 2 requested the shutdown of the CTA Pink Line due to the severity of the blaze. Additional units such as Engine 28, Engine 38, Engine 39, Engine 103, Truck 48, Tower Ladder 54, Truck 52, Battalion 12, Battalion 3, Battalion 19, Air Mask 6-4-4, Light Wagon 9-1-5, EMS Assistant Deputy Chief 4-4-11, and Special Operations Battalion 5-1-5 were brought in to help. At 1:31 PM, there was a request for a reserve snorkel unit, and Engine 107 and Engine 35, along with 6-6-1 (Reserve Snorkel), were deployed. By 1:38 PM, the alarm level was raised again to a 3-11 Alarm, with additional Tower Ladders arriving: Tower Ladder 10 and Tower Ladder 39. The situation continued to worsen, and by 1:45 PM, it was upgraded to a 4-11 Alarm, with an EMS Plan 1 and Level 1 HazMat response initiated. Units like Engine 5, Engine 57, Engine 14, Engine 113, Haz Mat 5-1-1, Ambulance 45, Ambulance 19, Ambulance 88, Ambulance 44, Ambulance 21, Ambulance 53, and Paramedic Field Chief 4-5-4 were all on site. By 1:58 PM, two master streams were being used on the west side of the building, but they weren't making much headway against the intense flames. At 2:00 PM, EMS Plan 1 was fully secured. Around 2:04 PM, Battalion 4 took over command, and all officers were instructed to switch to Channel 5 Command. By 2:30 PM, there were 11 master streams actively working, and the gas company was digging in Sector 1 to shut off the main supply. Additionally, there was one line connected to the sprinkler system in Sector 4. Despite the massive firefighting efforts, it wasn’t until 3:46 PM that the 4-11 Alarm was officially struck out by Battalion 3. Units marked with an underline were actively engaged, pumping water or extending equipment. Thanks to everyone involved—Dave, Scott, and Bill—for their hard work and dedication in managing this challenging situation. This incident serves as a reminder of the incredible teamwork required during emergencies like these. Let’s hope for a speedy recovery for those affected by the fire.
