Today, on Tuesday, June 20, 2023, at approximately 12:37 p.m., the Prospect Heights Fire Protection District responded to a report of a fire at 1209 N. Elmhurst Road. Upon arrival, crews observed substantial smoke billowing from the rear of the building. Further assessment revealed flames and heavy, dense smoke emanating not only from the roof but also extending into the interior.
The affected structure was a strip mall housing 12 businesses. Smoke had already begun infiltrating neighboring shops near the source of the fire. In response, all businesses were promptly evacuated for safety. Firefighters immediately deployed hoses inside the building to combat the blaze, which quickly spread within the ceilings and roof space. To control the rapid progression, multiple water streams from aerial ladder trucks were utilized alongside traditional hose lines.
Due to the intensity of the fire and the risk of extensive property damage, the incident commander activated the Mutual Aid Box Alarm System (MABAS), summoning additional resources from over a dozen surrounding fire departments. Their collective efforts played a crucial role in containing and ultimately extinguishing the flames.
Thankfully, no civilians sustained injuries. However, one firefighter sustained non-life-threatening injuries requiring medical attention. Fortunately, the adjacent apartment complex remained unaffected by the fire.
By approximately 1:37 p.m., the fire was brought under control after an hour of intense firefighting efforts involving multiple hose lines, four aerial apparatus water streams, and 26 fire apparatus units. Firefighters stayed on-site for more than three hours afterward to thoroughly inspect the premises for any remaining hotspots or signs of lingering danger.
As a result of the fire, all 12 businesses are temporarily displaced while assessments and necessary repairs are completed. The exact cause of the fire is still under official investigation.
In light of this incident, the Prospect Heights Fire Protection District urges residents and business owners to prioritize fire safety measures. Always have two escape routes planned for your home or workplace, ensure smoke detectors are installed and functioning properly, and establish an emergency evacuation plan. Fire sprinklers serve as a critical line of defense against catastrophic fires; had this building been equipped with them, the initial blaze might have been contained or extinguished entirely before the arrival of the fire department.
