The Ministry of Industry and Trade of Egypt recently issued a decree that set 10 new standards for imported cars and their accessories. Including headlights, tires, door locks, directional lights, alarms, brake pads, speedometers, exhaust purifiers, and rearview mirrors. The decree gives the vehicle importer a three-month grace period, and the auto parts importer has a one-month adjustment period to import standard automotive products. The ministry commissioned the Egyptian Standards and Quality Administration and the Egyptian Directorate General for Import and Export to decide on the methods and mechanisms for implementing the ministerial decree.
The Minister of Industry and Trade stated that the Ministry’s order was mainly aimed at protecting the interests of Egyptian consumers, eliminating the import of automobiles and accessories that did not meet international standards, ensuring safety and reducing road accidents. The Minister emphasized that Egypt has the ability to become a regional automobile manufacturing center. The Egyptian Machinery Industry Association and the automotive industry are working together to study and formulate the development strategy for the automotive industry.
According to Hassan Abdulmajed, Chairman of the Egyptian Standards and Quality Agency, these standards ensure that the new cars and their accessories in the Egyptian market have the highest safety standards, environmental standards and public health standards. It also said that if manufacturers and distributors of the automotive industry are all implemented in accordance with this standard and specifications, they will be conducive to market development and provide consumers with the freedom of choice.
