All regions of Tibet prohibit "white pollution"

The Tibet Autonomous Regional Environmental Protection Working Conference, held in Lhasa on the 9th, announced a comprehensive campaign to combat "white pollution" this year. The initiative, led by the Tibet Autonomous Regional Environmental Protection Bureau, aims to address the growing issue of plastic waste that has been increasingly affecting the region's environment. Zhang Yongze, director of the bureau, highlighted that in July 2004, Lhasa implemented a ban on "white pollution," encouraging the use of cloth and paper bags as alternatives to single-use plastic bags. This effort yielded positive results, significantly reducing plastic waste in the city. This year’s campaign will expand the initiative across the entire autonomous region, ensuring broader impact and long-term sustainability. In recent years, the rapid growth of tourism in Tibet has led to a surge in visitors, contributing to environmental challenges, particularly in popular tourist attractions where plastic waste has become a common sight. Additionally, as urban populations in various parts of Tibet continue to grow, the usage of plastic bags has increased dramatically. As a result, "white pollution" has emerged as a major environmental concern in several areas, threatening the ecological balance and natural beauty of the region. To tackle this issue, the new action plan includes stricter regulations on plastic bag distribution, public awareness campaigns, and incentives for businesses and residents to adopt eco-friendly alternatives. The government is also working closely with local communities and tourism operators to ensure compliance and promote sustainable practices. This move reflects the region’s commitment to protecting its unique environment while supporting responsible tourism and improving the quality of life for its residents. With continued efforts, the goal is to create a cleaner, greener Tibet for future generations.
