All regions of Tibet prohibit "white pollution"

The Tibet Autonomous Regional Environmental Protection Working Conference, held in Lhasa on the 9th, announced a comprehensive campaign to combat "white pollution" across the region this year. The initiative is led by the Tibet Autonomous Region Environmental Protection Bureau, which aims to address the growing issue of plastic waste that has become a serious environmental concern. Zhang Yongze, director of the bureau, highlighted that in July 2004, Lhasa implemented a ban on "white pollution," encouraging the use of cloth and paper bags as alternatives to single-use plastic bags. This measure achieved significant success in reducing plastic waste. This year’s action will expand the effort to cover the entire autonomous region, ensuring a more widespread impact. In recent years, with the rapid growth of tourism in Tibet, the number of visitors has surged, leading to increased plastic waste at popular attractions. Additionally, as urban populations in various parts of Tibet have grown, the usage of plastic bags has risen sharply. As a result, "white pollution" has become one of the main sources of environmental degradation in certain areas of the region. The new campaign emphasizes public awareness, stricter enforcement of regulations, and the promotion of eco-friendly alternatives. Local governments and communities are expected to play an active role in implementing these measures. Officials also stressed the importance of long-term solutions, such as improving waste management systems and encouraging sustainable consumption habits. This move reflects the region's commitment to protecting its natural environment while supporting economic development. By tackling the issue of plastic waste, Tibet aims to preserve its unique ecological heritage for future generations.
