In response to the central government's newly announced policy restricting the use of plastic shopping bags, several Chinese and foreign business leaders in Beijing expressed their support on the 9th, stating they will implement corresponding measures to help customers adapt.
The State Council’s General Office recently issued a notice titled "Notice on Restricting the Use of Plastic Shopping Bags for Production and Sales," emphasizing that plastic bags have become a major contributor to white pollution. Starting June 1, 2008, all supermarkets, shopping malls, and retail stores nationwide are required to charge for plastic bags and stop providing them for free.
According to reports from Beijing supermarkets on the 9th, although they are still offering free plastic bags at the moment, they all express strong support for the national policy and are actively preparing for its implementation.
Chen Bo, Carrefour’s public relations officer, told reporters that the company takes the policy very seriously and is working hard to ensure full compliance by June 1.
Representatives from companies like Walmart and Wangfujing Department Store also stated that this policy aligns with the broader public interest and reflects corporate social responsibility. They view it as an essential part of their duty to society.
A staff member from Wangfujing Department Store noted that one of the core themes of this year’s Beijing Olympic Games is the Green Olympics. This policy presents a great opportunity for commercial enterprises to contribute to environmental sustainability. In addition to following regulations, the store plans to take proactive steps, such as educating consumers about environmental protection.
Many retailers in Beijing acknowledged that the policy may cause some short-term inconvenience but believe it will not significantly affect the market in the long run. They are committed to implementing supportive measures to make the transition easier for customers.
Walmart mentioned that eco-friendly shopping bags are already widely used in developed countries. The company plans to increase its promotional efforts in the future. It is also considering repurposing old employee uniforms into reusable bags to give away to customers for free.
Chen Bo added that since 2004, Carrefour has been promoting non-woven reusable bags in China. In November last year, the company launched new recyclable bags, which sold over 80,000 units within ten days. Going forward, Carrefour will continue to promote eco-friendly options and encourage consumers to embrace environmentally conscious habits.
